The resort
Corralco sits on the northern slope of Lonquimay volcano, inside the Malalcahuello National Reserve, offering runs for all levels with over 700 metres of skiable vertical and panoramic views of the Lonquimay, Llaima and Tolhuaca volcanoes on clear days. Being a relatively new resort far from Santiago (about 7 hours by car, or 1.5 hours from Temuco), it draws far fewer crowds than central-zone resorts in high season.
What else to do
Besides alpine skiing, Corralco offers ski touring and snowshoeing through snow-covered araucaria forests, something not found at resorts further north. The resort's mountain hotel has a heated pool with cordillera views, ideal after a day on the snow. In the snowmelt season, the same area is used for trekking and downhill mountain biking.
When to go
The ski season runs June to September or October depending on the year, with the best snow in July and August. It's worth checking access-road conditions before travelling, since it can close temporarily during heavy snowfall; the Malalcahuello hot springs, a few minutes away, are a good option for arrival or rest days.
