One canyon, four activities
San Gil owes its fame to the geography of the Chicamocha Canyon and the Fonce River, which within a few kilometres offer rafting rapids, rappelling walls, caves for spelunking and air currents for paragliding. That concentration is what sets the town apart from other adventure destinations in Colombia: you can go rafting in the morning and paraglide in the afternoon on the same day, without travelling more than half an hour between activities.
The activities, one by one
The Fonce River offers class III rafting rapids, accessible to beginners, on two- to three-hour runs; the more demanding Suárez River has class IV stretches for those with experience. Paragliding is flown tandem from viewpoints over the Chicamocha Canyon, with views that reveal the canyon's true scale, one of the largest in South America. Caving takes place in nearby caves such as Cueva del Indio, with guided routes of varying difficulty, and rappelling happens at natural waterfalls like Juan Curí, combining the descent with a swim in the pool below.
When to go
San Gil has warm weather year-round due to its low valley location, with rainy seasons between April-May and October-November that can affect river flow and paragliding visibility. The drier months, December to March and July to August, offer the most stable conditions for combining several activities in a few days.
