Experiences and local guides in Antigua Guatemala
A UNESCO-listed colonial town at 1,545 m ringed by the Agua, Fuego and Acatenango volcanoes, and the base for camping opposite Fuego's eruptions and visiting coffee farms.
Nature
Antigua Guatemala sits in a valley at about 1,545 m, surrounded by three volcanoes: Agua (3,766 m) to the south and, to the west, Acatenango (3,976 m) and Fuego (3,763 m), known for its almost constant activity. Founded in 1543, it was the capital of the Captaincy General of Guatemala until the Santa Marta earthquakes of 1773 forced the capital to move. Its ruined churches, convents and cobbled streets have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, and the fertile slopes around it are covered in coffee plantations.
Activities
- Two-day climb of Acatenango from La Soledad (about 2,400 m): 4 to 5 h of steep ascent to camps facing Fuego and a sunrise summit; climbing Fuego itself has been banned since April 2026
- Half-day hike on Pacaya volcano from San Francisco de Sales, across lava fields from recent eruptions, with local guides
- Walking the centre: Santa Catalina Arch, Plaza Mayor, the cathedral ruins and the Capuchinas and La Recolección convents
- Coffee tour with small growers in San Miguel Escobar, on the slopes of Agua volcano, from the plant to the cup
- Guatemalan cooking class (pepián, tortillas on a wood-fired stove) and visits to nearby Maya villages such as San Antonio Aguas Calientes, known for backstrap-loom weaving
When to go
November to April is the dry season, with clearer skies for watching the eruptions from Acatenango, although the summit freezes from December to February. From May to October it rains most afternoons. Holy Week fills the streets with processions and sawdust carpets, and on 1 November giant kites fly in Sumpango and Santiago Sacatepéquez. Before climbing, check the latest bulletin on Fuego volcano.
How to get there
La Aurora International Airport (GUA) in Guatemala City is about 40 km away; the drive by shuttle or taxi takes 1 h to 1 h 30 depending on traffic. Tourist shuttles run from Antigua to Lake Atitlán (2 h 30 to 3 h), and daily flights of about 1 h link the capital with Flores (FRS) for Tikal. Acatenango and Pacaya tours usually include transport from Antigua.
