Carahue sits on the Imperial river, La Araucanía's largest, on the site of Imperial, the first city founded by the Spanish in the area and destroyed during the Arauco War in the 17th century. Today it's a quiet town of fishermen and farmers, on the way to the coast and the river's mouth at Puerto Saavedra.

When to go
December to March for boating and fishing, when the river is at its lowest and steadiest; the rest of the year flow rises with the rains and some river activities are suspended.
