Experiences and local guides in Creel
Mountain town in the Sierra Tarahumara and stop on the Chepe railway, the base for exploring the Copper Canyon, Basaseachi Falls and the Rarámuri communities.
Nature
Creel is a Pueblo Mágico founded in 1907 as a railway station, at about 2,300 m in the Sierra Tarahumara, part of the Sierra Madre Occidental. It is surrounded by pine and oak forests, valleys of oddly shaped rocks and Lake Arareko. It is the gateway to the Copper Canyon (Barrancas del Cobre), a system of seven canyons that reaches 1,879 m deep at Urique, home of the Rarámuri or Tarahumara people, known for their long-distance runners and for their basketry, violins and textiles.
Activities
- Chepe Express train between Creel and Los Mochis, about 9 hours of tunnels and bridges, stopping at Divisadero station and its viewpoint over the Urique canyon
- Copper Canyon Adventure Park, 1.5 km from Divisadero station and about 45 minutes from Creel: 3 km cable car, 2,554 m ZipRider, a circuit of seven zip lines of almost 5 km with suspension bridges, and a via ferrata
- Full-day trip to Basaseachi Falls, a 246 m free fall in its national park, with viewpoints over the Candameña canyon
- Around Creel by bike, on horseback or on foot: Lake Arareko (7 km), the valleys of the Monks, Mushrooms and Frogs, Cusárare Falls (30 m, 22 km away) and the Recohuata hot springs
- Hikes along the rim and down into the canyons from Divisadero and Areponápuchi, and a trip to the mining town of Batopilas, founded in the 17th century at the bottom of its canyon
- Rarámuri culture: museum in the old railway station, communities such as San Ignacio de Arareko and crafts for sale in town
When to go
September and October, at the end of the rains, bring green landscapes and clearer skies; from July to September the rains give Basaseachi its greatest flow. From December to February it is cold, with frost and possible snow in Creel, while the canyon floors stay mild. April to June is the driest and hottest season, especially at lower elevations.
How to get there
Nearest airport with scheduled flights: Chihuahua (CUU), about 260 km away; 3.5 to 4 hours by car via Cuauhtémoc, La Junta and San Juanito, or about 5 hours by bus. The Chepe Express train arrives from Los Mochis (LMM), in Sinaloa, in about 9 hours via Divisadero. A regional airport near town has operated since 2024, with very few flights.
