Experiences and local guides in Cunco
A quiet town on the shore of Lake Colico, a lightly visited gateway to the China Muerta National Reserve and the Llaima and Sollipulli volcanoes.
Nature
Cunco sits on Lake Colico, smaller and quieter than neighbouring Villarrica and Caburgua, with native-forest shores that are still largely undeveloped. It's the lesser-known gateway to the China Muerta National Reserve and the western face of Sollipulli volcano, whose crater is capped by a glacier.
Activities
- Kayaking and shore fishing on Lake Colico, without the crowds of the area's more touristy lakes
- Trekking in the China Muerta National Reserve, through araucaria and coigüe forests with almost no other visitors
- Horseback rides across Araucanian farmland toward Sollipulli volcano, one of the least-visited in the region
- Visits to local cheese makers and traditional fairs, in a still-rural ranching and farming area
When to go
December to March for the lake and trekking; the rest of the year brings steady rain, with misty landscapes that also draw travellers looking for quiet off the high season.
