El Bolsón sits in a valley between Cerro Piltriquitrón and Cerro Hielo Azul, in a humid microclimate unusual for arid Patagonia that supports hops, soft fruit and dense native forest. The town declared itself "nuclear-free" in the 1980s and has kept a strong identity of craftspeople and alternative communities ever since.
Activities
- The Plaza Pagano craft fair, with over 400 vendors three days a week
- Trekking to the Hielo Azul glacier or the Cajón del Azul canyon, with mountain refuges for one- to three-day hikes
- Tandem hang gliding and paragliding from Cerro Piltriquitrón, with views over the whole valley
- A craft beer route: over a dozen breweries using hops grown locally
When to go
December to March for mountain trekking and the open-air fair; autumn (April-May) paints the valley in intense colours thanks to the humid microclimate.
