El Calafate sits on the shore of Lake Argentino, the country's largest, a milky turquoise fed by glaciers. 80 km away, the Perito Moreno advances over the lake with a 5 km front 60 metres high that calves with a roar; beyond, the Upsala and Spegazzini glaciers and the icefield. Steppe with guanacos, rheas and condors, and the Nimez lagoon with flamingos two blocks from town.

When to go

October to April for cruises and ice trekking, with long days and wind. Glacier calving is most frequent in January and February. In winter the Perito Moreno stays open, with snow, silence and fewer people.

How to get there

Comandante Armando Tola airport (FTE) is 20 km away, with flights from Buenos Aires (3 h 15), Ushuaia, Bariloche and Trelew. Buses to El Chaltén (3 hours), Puerto Natales (5 hours, with border) and Río Gallegos. Perito Moreno glacier is 80 km away: regular buses, tours and taxis; cruises and ice trekking leave from Bajo de las Sombras pier.
