Nature

Galvarino, named after the Mapuche toqui who resisted the Spanish, is the district with Chile's highest share of Mapuche population: more than eight in ten residents. The landscape is gentle farming and ranching hills, without dramatic natural landmarks, but with a Mapuche cultural identity that stays very much alive day to day.

Activities

• Visits to rukas (traditional Mapuche homes) and communities that welcome cultural tourism, with explanations of the Mapuche worldview and the nguillatún ceremony
• Buying Mapuche loom weaving, wool textiles and silverwork directly at community fairs
• Traditional food: catutos, muday and asado al palo prepared by local families
• A short route combinable with Temuco (45 minutes away) or as a stop on the way to the Carahue and Toltén coast

When to go

Year-round for the cultural experience; the nguillatún and other Mapuche ceremonies, when open to visitors, are usually held in January and February.
