Nature

Jericoacoara is a village of sand streets between the sea and a national park of dunes, 300 km from Fortaleza. The trade wind blows from July to January at 20 to 30 knots almost every day, over a flat-water lagoon at Preá and gentle waves in front of the village. Around it: the Pedra Furada arch, the Sunset Dune, the Azul and Paraíso lagoons and miles of empty beach.

Activities

• Kitesurfing at Preá, Guriú and the Jijoca lagoon: schools, 20 to 60 km downwinders and progression camps
• Windsurfing off the village, with rental gear and lessons
• Buggy and quad rides over the dunes to the lagoons and Tatajuba, horseback riding and sandboarding
• Hikes to Pedra Furada and the Serrote, sunset on the Sunset Dune
• Stand-up paddle and kayaking on the lagoons, capoeira and forró on the beach at night

When to go

July to January for wind (kite and windsurf), peaking from August to November. February to June is the rainy season, with full lagoons, less wind and fewer people.

How to get there

Jericoacoara airport (JJD) in Cruz, 30 km away, has flights from São Paulo, Fortaleza and Belo Horizonte, then a 4x4 transfer along the beach. From Fortaleza, 5 hours by van or bus to Jijoca and 4x4 into the village (streets are sand, ordinary cars cannot enter). Kite schools are on the main beach and at Preá, 15 km away.
