Rivers that look like aquariums
Bonito, in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, became known for an unusual geological feature: its rivers are fed by springs that filter the water through limestone, leaving it almost sediment-free. The result is water courses where visibility in rivers like the Sucuri or the Da Prata can exceed 20 to 30 metres, clear enough to see fish, aquatic plants and the sandy bottom in full detail. Flutuação means, quite literally, letting the current carry you along with snorkel, mask and a flotation vest, with no need to actively swim.
How a trip works
Each river is private property with a limited daily quota, so trips are booked in advance and usually include transport from town, snorkel gear and a compulsory guide who accompanies the group in the water. The float itself lasts 40 minutes to an hour depending on the river, and before entering there's a short briefing on how to keep your body position to avoid touching the bottom or the plants, key to preserving the ecosystem.

Besides river floating, the area has caves with underground lakes such as Gruta do Lago Azul, waterfalls for swimming, and scuba diving for those already certified. The best time to visit is the dry season, from April to September, when the water is even clearer; during the rainy season some rivers may close temporarily due to flooding.
