What the excursion is like
Gran Aventura combines two stages: first a roughly 20-minute off-road truck ride through trails in the Misiones jungle, with commentary on Iguazú National Park's flora and fauna, then a rigid inflatable boat that navigates the lower Iguazú river to approach the San Martín falls and the base of Devil's Throat, driving under the curtain of water several times. It's an officially licensed activity inside the park, with life jackets and dry bags provided for gear.
What to expect
You get completely soaked: swimwear or quick-dry clothing is best, and it's worth bringing a change of clothes for after. The boat's speed and the force of the water under the falls make it fairly adrenaline-heavy, though no prior experience or special fitness is needed; it's not recommended for very young children or anyone with back problems. The full excursion, including transport, takes 1 to 2 hours.
When to go
It runs year-round, though river flow varies: in the rainy season (December to March) the falls hit harder and the experience is more intense, while in the dry months the water is clearer. It's worth booking a time slot on arrival at the park, since slots sell out in high season.
