The hike
The trail to Refugio Frey starts at the base of Cerro Catedral, 20 minutes from Bariloche, and climbs about 800 metres of elevation over roughly four hours to Laguna Toncek, where the refuge sits. The path crosses lenga forest and then more open, rocky terrain, with Cerro Catedral's granite spires in view for most of the climb. It's demanding but requires no technical skill or mountaineering gear: anyone in decent shape with proper footwear can complete it in a day.
What's up there
Laguna Toncek is ringed by granite towers and spires that draw rock climbers from around the world in summer (it's one of Argentina's best rock-climbing spots), and the Club Andino Bariloche refuge serves hot food and offers overnight stays for those who prefer to split the trip over two days. From there you can also climb Cerro Catedral and ride the ski resort's chairlift system down, skipping a repeat descent on foot.
When to go
The best season is December to April, when the trail is snow-free; outside those months there can be icy stretches requiring crampons. In high season (January-February) the refuge and trail get busy, so starting early in the morning avoids peak traffic and leaves plenty of time to descend before dark.
