From scientific tool to tourist experience
Canopy tours were born in Monteverde in the 1970s as a system of pulleys and platforms biologists used to study the cloud forest canopy, a world apart that had until then been almost impossible to observe up close. That same idea, adapted with steel cables and certified harnesses, became the activity that now draws most visitors: crossing 10 to 15 cables suspended above the forest canopy, some over a kilometre long, at heights exceeding 100 metres above the ground.
What it feels and looks like
The feeling changes a lot between the first cable, short and low to build confidence, and the last ones, where speed and height make the forest look like an endless green sea. With luck and quiet, you can spot toucans, howler monkeys or quetzals from above, something no ground-level hike allows. Full circuits last two to three hours including transport and the initial safety briefing, and no previous experience is needed.
Monteverde beyond the canopy
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve and the Santa Elena Reserve offer trails to pair the canopy tour with guided walks focused on bird watching and ecosystem explanations, while hanging bridges let you see the canopy from a calmer perspective. The dry season, December to April, has less rain but also less mist; the green season, May to November, is when the cloud forest truly looks cloudy, with short afternoon showers.
